USB 3.0 port does not work on Windows XP – ThinkPad

Symptom

USB 3.0 is not supported on Windows XP. If the user installs fresh Windows XP Operating System, there will be a yellow bang in the device manager for the USB 3.0 controller (PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1E31). This is because there is no inbox driver for USB on Windows XP.

Affected System
  • Helix
  • L330, L430, L530
  • T430, T430i, T430s, T430si, T430u, T431s
  • T530, T530i
  • Twist S230u
  • W530
  • X1 Carbon (Type 34xx)
  • X230, X230s, X230 Tablet, X230i, X230i Table
Affected Operating System
  • Windows XP
Solution

To remove this yellow bang without disabling the controller, the user may install Intel INF(Chipset) driver. Intel INF(Chipset) will rename the controller to "Intel (R) Series/C216 Chipset Family Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller - 1E31" and transfer the controller under “System Devices”.

Note:

Even though the Intel INF(Chipset) driver is installed, the USB 3.0 port will still function as USB 2.0.
